Burnout Is Real: How We’re Prioritizing Mental Health While Running a Business

Let’s be honest—running a business isn’t always pretty. There are deadlines to meet, clients to serve, emails to answer, and a million little decisions to make before lunch. And while we love what we do, we’ve also come to accept something else that’s just as true:

Burnout is real.

As a small team supporting other small businesses, we know what it feels like to hit that wall. The one where your creativity starts sputtering, your motivation gets muddy, and your to-do list grows while your energy shrinks.

At Farmhouse Creative, we’re learning (and re-learning) that mental health has to be part of our business plan. Here’s how we’re making space for it—on purpose.

1. We’re Setting Realistic Expectations
It’s tempting to say yes to everything. But we’ve learned the hard way that doing too much isn’t sustainable. We’re getting better at:

  • Giving realistic timelines
  • Building in buffer time for creative work
  • Saying “not right now” when we need to protect our bandwidth
  • Boundaries are not only good for us—they’re good for our clients, too.

2. We’re Taking Breaks (Even Short Ones)
Not every break has to be a vacation. Sometimes stepping away for a walk, grabbing lunch away from the desk, or pausing for a few minutes of silence can reset your mind and help you return with a fresh perspective.

We’re embracing the idea that small breaks help us do better work—and stay more connected to the joy in what we do.

3. We’re Talking About It
Burnout thrives in silence. But we’re learning to be honest—with ourselves and each other—when we feel overwhelmed. Whether it’s a check-in between team members or a heart- to-heart with another business owner, simply naming it helps.

Running a business doesn’t mean we have to power through everything alone. Talking about mental health is part of how we support each other—and show up stronger for our clients.

4. We’re Creating Workflows That Work For Us
We’ve ditched the idea that hustle is the only way forward. Instead, we’re focusing on systems that serve our style—automating what we can, batching content when possible, and creating workflows that let us do our best creative work without constant stress. Because a calm business is a clear business.

5. We’re Remembering the Why
When the day-to-day starts to feel heavy, we pause and remember why we started. For us, that’s supporting small businesses in Muncie and beyond, helping them bring their stories to life through branding, print, and digital design.

Keeping that “why” close keeps us grounded—and helps us reconnect with the passion that started it all.

You’re Not Alone.

If you’re a fellow small business owner feeling the weight of burnout, know this: You’re not weak. You’re human. And you’re in good company.

Taking care of your mental health isn’t a luxury—it’s leadership. It’s sustainability. It’s smart business.

We’re with you.
