Periscope: Live Video for (Really) Small Business

Have you heard of Periscope yet? Don’t feel bad if you haven’t. It seems like there’s a new social media platform popping up every day, and as a busy business owner you don’t need to know about most of them.

Periscope ought to get honorable mention, though. Simply put, it’s live TV from your phone. Periscope is an easy way to show an online audience what you’re shooting right now, and to get real-time responses on your screen. (Pretty neat!)

The question is, how can you realistically use Periscope as part of your marketing strategy? Let’s start by taking a look at how the heavy hitters have been using it.

BIG BRANDS
Nissan, Taco Bell, Red Bull, Mountain Dew – these are some of the megabrands that have been using Periscope to offer sneak peeks into exclusive events, announce new products and special offers, and conduct live Q&A sessions with customers.

SMALL BRANDS
Here at Farmhouse Creative we specialize in helping small businesses grow. We’re looking at this platform and asking, how can the VERY small business owner with a just handful of employees and not much time use Periscope?

If you know you’re small, think small to start. Experiment with short, simple “shows”. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Restaurants/retail – Spend 5 minutes on Monday morning interviewing your store manager about new items or specials for the week.
  2. Real estate/construction – Let your client lead you on a 10-minute tour of their recently purchased or built home.
  3. Nonprofits – Once a month, tell a short story about the impact your organization made in someone’s life (and ask for support!).

Remember, this is live, so be sure to tell your existing/potential customers about it! Use the social media channels you’re already on to get the word out in advance of every “show” to build your audience.

This is just the beginning. We don’t yet know all the potential this platform has for small businesses, but we’re excited to find out.
